DAY 1

Getting Started — The 8 Beginner Pitfalls

Play Normal (普通) until at least Day 100 of your first run to learn the systems and unlock achievements. Higher difficulties exist but punish unfamiliar players hard.

Hero's Adventure is designed for multiple playthroughs. You cannot do everything in one run. Achievements give traits and inheritance bonuses for new characters, so 'wasting' a run is much less costly than it feels.
First-run goal: Survive Day 100 (the 燕 invasion), pick ONE sect, learn the combat loop. Don't chase a 'perfect' run — chase achievements for your second run.

1Treating Constitution (体质) as 'impossible to raise'Common myth — it IS raisable, just slowly: Blue+ food (主食/菜肴/汤水/甜品) gives +1/+3/+5 per item by tier; reading 丙/乙/甲 佛医经书 gives team-wide +50/+150/+200; the 不老泉双修 quest gives +260. Max Agility first at creation; treat Constitution as a long-term project, not a creation dump.
2Picking a 'cold' weapon class without knowing it's cold剑 is the community consensus first-pick (2 actions/turn, smoothest growth). 拳/刀 are also fine. 棍/枪/匕首/扇/笔/乐器 are 'cold' — very few high-tier arts exist, late-game options are limited. If targeting 琅琊剑阁 with sword, keep Int between 7-9 (Int = 10 locks a Stone Pillar Ultimate).
3Ignoring the teach-then-recruit XP sequence(1) Ask the NPC for one lesson, (2) recruit them, (3) equip as instructor — XP multiplies.
4Identifying multiple items at onceIdentification frequently downgrades quality (blue → green). Identify one at a time, save-scum each high-rarity roll.
5Grinding a skill before getting its XP accessory磨刀石 (sharpening stone) boosts woodcutting XP, 大鹅羽毛 (goose feather) boosts fishing, 奇怪吊饰 boosts beast-taming. Get them FIRST.

Normal-difficulty template: Max Agility, secondary Constitution, the other four at 1. Pick Fist (拳) weapon class. Pick the most balanced background option.
⚠️ If you plan to join 琅琊剑阁: you need higher Intelligence to access their sword arts — but capping Int at 10 LOCKS one of the Stone Pillar Yellow-grade Ultimates. Keep Int between 7–9 if dual-targeting.

Days 1–10: Lost Forest

Collect 15 small berries (saved for a later event), fight to character level 15, befriend Liu Shiba (刘十八), pick up 2 Lingzhi mushrooms and the Combat Experience Treasure.

Days 10–40: First Sect

Pick ONE sect from the cheat-sheet below. Run the sect tutorial quests for guaranteed manual + gear rewards. Avoid scattering between sects — most are mutually exclusive in some way.

Days 40–80: Build Your Loadout

Identify your target build (see Build tier list). Farm the source NPCs and locations for your internal art + ultimate. Recruit 2–3 companions and run the teach-then-recruit sequence on key skills.

Day 100: 燕 Invasion

If you've enlisted under General Lü (吕将军) via the 楚襄城 main questline, you defend the city. Winning unlocks the 楚襄城守护者 ending and is the gate to all 5 true endings.

⚠️ If you're not built for combat by Day 100, you can still win by stockpiling consumables and using control-stack builds. Pure direct-damage runs sometimes wipe at the 燕 commander fight.

MARTIAL ARTS

Skills, Manuals & Cultivation

Manuals are quality-tiered. Each tier has a slot limit — exceeding it taxes XP gain for every skill in that tier. Don't learn skills you don't intend to use.

⚠️ Remnant (残本) skills: a Remnant-quality Orange skill still occupies a slot AND taxes XP for the entire tier. Always upgrade to Good Copy (善本) at the Sutra Hall before learning.

Hidden mechanic: an NPC instructor gives massively more XP if you've ALREADY had at least one lesson from them before recruiting.

  1. Find the NPC, pay for or unlock ONE lesson in the skill you want.
  2. Raise their affection and recruit them into your party.
  3. Equip them as your instructor for that skill — XP multiplies.
This works for most non-trivial skills. The XP gap vs. recruiting first then learning is large enough that it can save weeks of in-game time.

ONE sect with three name options. Triggers Day 3 in 无名小村 if you haven't joined any sect yet. Old man asks your aspiration → pick one of: 天下第一 (→ 无双宗), 一统江湖 (→ 天道帮), 保家卫国 (→ 保国会). All three are mechanically the same sect.Easy
⚠️ 道玄宗 is the most missable sect in the game. If you have ANY interest in joining it, do NOT join any other sect first — the lockout is permanent for the run.
Beginner-friendly first-run picks: 神捕门 (easy entry, good rewards), 燕子窝 (easiest entry), 释法寺 (low combat barrier).

无双宗, 天道帮 and 保国会 are NOT three separate sects — they are the SAME sect (community nickname: 老头门 / 'Old Man's Sect') with three name options chosen at recruitment. New players (and bad guides) often list them as separate, which is wrong. Picking is purely a flavour / trait choice; mechanically you join one sect either way.

Trigger condition

On Day 3, enter 无名小村 (Unnamed Village). You must NOT have joined any other sect yet. An old man appears, becomes your master after dialogue, then asks your aspiration (志向).

Why old players love 老头门 — the late-game payoff

老头门 quest line eventually unlocks high-value golden-tier (甲级) manuals not easily found elsewhere — community-confirmed drops include the 不动山 stance line and 九州诀 (top-tier sustain internal art). For a sect with such an easy entry, the late-game manual ceiling is unusually high.

⚠️ Lockout: joining 老头门 (any of the 3 names) blocks joining other major sects for the rest of the chapter. You CAN leave 老头门 mid-game, but you still can't join others afterward — the lockout is on master-disciple binding, not on current membership. Don't drift in without committing.
Picking guide: If aiming for 楚襄城守护者 / true endings → 保家卫国 (保国会). If chasing the most varied martial arts collection → 天下第一 (无双宗). For combat-heavy / villain-curious runs → 一统江湖 (天道帮). All three give the same sect content — the difference is the trait + flavour.

Turn-Based Combat Mechanics

Combat damage flows through four mechanics; high-end builds usually combine two.

These combos require fully geared late-game characters. Don't try to force them in Chapter 1 — partial implementations are weaker than coherent A-tier builds.

Weapons split into 6 categories. The first 3 are the 'mainstream' picks with dense high-tier (yellow/red) art coverage. The last 3 (long-handle / short / instruments) are community-tagged as '冷门' (cold) — they work but have far fewer endgame arts to chase.

First-run quick verdict: Pick 剑. Train 暗器 on the side from day 1. If you want a flavour run, 拳掌 or 刀 are equally fine. Avoid 乐器 for first run unless you specifically want the 妙音坊 roleplay arc.
Why 'cold' weapons stay cold: high-tier (黄/红) manuals for 长柄/短兵/乐器 are clustered in a few specific NPCs and locations. If those NPCs die or those locations gate behind another quest, your endgame options shrink. Mainstream weapons (剑/拳/刀) have multiple redundant source points.
COMPANIONS

Recruitment — The Hidden 59 Cap

Most recruitable NPCs cap at affection 59 until you complete their breakthrough quest, which unlocks 60+. Many new players gift items endlessly without realising this.

  • Below 60: friendship locked at 59
  • At 60+: recruitment becomes possible
  • Sect leaders typically also need their unique quest line completed

The bulk of companions just need affection 60 + their breakthrough quest. The ones below break that pattern — they have item, status, skill, party-member, or sequence dependencies that trip players up. Read BEFORE you start grinding affection.

In each major sect's quest line, picking the option to confront 秦会之 triggers a chain: a carrier pigeon reveals the location of 九流门 HQ → fight through multiple battles → defeat 秦会之 → unlock the 'Lord of Nine Currents' (九流门主) ending.

Sect endings count as a category — each sect's variant is slightly different but they share the underlying 秦会之 trigger. The community sometimes counts them as multiple endings, sometimes as one.
Wulin Alliance Leader (武林盟主)
HARDEST normal ending. Max affection with leaders of all 6 major sects: 九江水寨, 琅琊剑阁, 道玄宗, 神捕门, 释法寺, 儒圣馆. Then fight all 6 leaders in sequence — win every fight.
Wulin Tyrant (武林霸主)
The inverse — and much easier. Annihilate (destroy) all 6 of the same sects.

Hidden Events & Power Tricks

If you have 天魔噬魂术 internal art equipped, completing the 儒圣馆 长生 (Eternal Life) quest unlocks the option to 'drain' the NPC 老蔡 into a husk. Reward: +2 to all 5 attributes — permanent.

⚠️ Only available to characters carrying 天魔噬魂术. Skipping the internal art locks the trick.

Enter the starter village carrying ≥500 silver → a beggar attempts to steal it → fight triggers. Win = unlocks the Beat-Dog Staff manual (打狗棍法), +money, +reputation. Lose = silver gone.

DXLZZ doesn't have a Sutra Hall storage bonus or an AFK auto-train mode the way some other wuxia games do. The realistic levers are:

  1. Teach-then-recruit (先学后招) — ask an NPC for ONE lesson first, THEN recruit them as your party instructor. Skill XP from that instructor jumps significantly. Reverse order = no bonus.
  2. Accessory before grinding — Whetstone (磨刀石) boosts wood-cutting XP, Goose Feather (大鹅羽毛) boosts fishing XP, Strange Pendant (奇怪吊饰) boosts beast-taming XP. Equip BEFORE you grind, not after.
  3. Comprehension (悟性) for skill XP rate — high 悟性 multiplies XP per training cycle. Raise via in-game items (悟性 IS raisable, unlike Constitution).
  4. Manual quality matters — Remnant (残本) Orange skills tax the entire tier's XP. Upgrade to Good Copy (善本) at Sutra Hall (藏经阁) compiling BEFORE learning, or just don't learn Remnant Oranges at all.
No 10× speed AFK loop here. Plan your party + accessories + 悟性 instead of expecting an idle-style fast-forward.
ROMANCE

Romance & Marriage — All 25 (24 + 1 DLC)

  1. Raise affection with the candidate to 知己 (Kindred Spirit) level — usually 100 affection plus their personal quest chain.
  2. Travel to 白云观 (White Cloud Temple) in 楚襄城 during daytime → triggers a scene that unlocks 月老殿 (Moon Elder's Temple).
  3. Obtain a 三生石 (Three Lives Stone). Required by 12 of the 24 candidates.
  4. Bring the candidate as a party member to 月老殿 with the stone → marriage scene.
Reward: Marriage unlocks unique paired combat techniques + special traits. Several candidates (e.g. 福箐郡主) unlock entirely new sect/NPC access via the resulting status (e.g. 皇室驸马).

Skip costForfeit the game's biggest single Constitution source AND a top-tier paired-combat trait (鸾凤和鸣). On long-term runs this is the single most impactful quest line in the wider game.
Hostile route?No documented 'kill 付瑶琴' route. If you skip her line and pursue villain content separately, she remains a non-recruitable NPC. Killing her in combat (if forced by other questlines) breaks all spring/cultivation rewards permanently for the run.
⚠️ Killing-vs-sparing in this game: morality (道德) is tracked numerically. Negative 道德 locks several good-aligned routes (e.g. 曲忘忧 recruit needs 道德 ≥ 100) and enables villain endings (e.g. 斩首结局). The system doesn't usually offer 'secret dark rewards' for killing quest NPCs — the dark routes are achieved by macro-political choices (joining 燕子窝, kidnapping 洛千雪) rather than petty murders. Verify any 'kill X for hidden reward' rumour in-game before committing.

Do I need to play the original Hero's Adventure first?

Not required — 外传 has a new protagonist and is designed to be playable standalone. What's the demo like? How long?

The demo covers the prologue + first part of Chapter 1 across 5 explorable scenes (主角家, 破庙, 茶摊, 盘蛇岭, 栖霞镇) and reportedly 50+ side quests. Exact playtime isn't published, but completionists typically report ~5-10 hours. Plenty of room to test the Five Elements system.

Will my original-game saves carry over?
